Robert J. Black is presently an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology and contact lens specialist at the Albert Florens Storm Eye Institute at The Medical University of South Carolina.
Dr. Black has been in practice for over 30 years and before coming to MUSC, he consulted with refractive surgery patients at The Cincinnati Eye Institue and at his own private practices in Troy and Piqua, Ohio. Dr. Black has been on the faculty at The Ohio State University, The Air Force Academy, and the Columbus State College where he lectured on anatomy and physiology of the eye. He has a Bachelors degree, Masters degree and Doctorate in Optometry from The Ohio State University. He was selected at the Outstanding Graduate in his class and was selected as the Outstanding Young Optometrist in the State of
Ohio in 1982. While at The Ohio State University, he was on the
soccer team and was elected as an All-American athlete.
On active duty for 7 years, he was assigned to the First Special
Forces command, lecturing at The Special Operations School where he was recognized as a distinguished lecturer and earned a commendation medal for his work in Special Forces.
He is Board Certified in treatment and management of Ocular Pathology and ocular diagnostic pharmacology. He was selected in 2007 and 2009 as one of “America’s Top Optometrists.”
